EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT BOTOX

So What is Botox?

When most people refer to Botox, they are actually referring to a group of products that are known as neuromodulators. A neuromodulator is an injectable drug that relaxes and softens the skin by restricting facial muscles from contracting. In Canada, the four commercially-approved available brands of neuromodulators are BOTOX, Nuceiva, Dysport and Xeomin. There are some subtle differences between each, which our injector can walk you through during your consult, but overall, they each achieve similar results. For the sake of simplicity, unless otherwise noted, when we refer to Botox, we are referring to any of these four brands of neuromodulators.

When you typically hear people talking about “going for Botox,” what they are receiving is a non-surgical treatment that reduces the look of wrinkles caused by the muscle movements of your everyday life - frowning, squinting, laughing, or raising your eyebrows. The result is you’ll noticeably reverse and slow down the visible signs of aging - you’ll look younger and well rested.

Botox is administered via a needle -- don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt more than a few small pinches -- that works underneath the skin’s surface to:

  • Reduce the contractions of overactive muscles

  • Temporarily reduce the appearance of fine to severe wrinkles

  • Leave your skin looking refreshed and rejuvenated

The actual series of Botox injections during your 30-minute appointment only takes about 5 to 7 minutes. While everyone’s experience will be unique, people typically notice a visible difference within 24 to 48 hours, with results continuing over the next 10 days. We schedule a follow-up appointment around the two-week mark to ensure the effects of the initial treatment have worked as planned. The visible improvements of your treatment last approximately four months, at which time you’ll want to schedule your next treatment. Most people who regularly get Botox go for three to four treatments per year.

First time getting Botox in Winnipeg?
Here’s what to expect and plan for before and after

A Botox appointment takes about a half-hour, with three to five injection sites per area being addressed. After a full assessment, the injector specialist will determine the number of ‘units’ required to achieve your desired results. Most clients need between 25 and 50 units per session.

Your skin will be cleansed to remove any make-up or oil for optimal results. When administered, the injections feel similar to being pinched and may leave a small, mosquito-bite-like bump for a few hours afterward.

Because Botox isn’t a surgical procedure, there’s no downtime or recovery to worry about. You can be in and out for a treatment over your lunch break and get back to your regular routine almost immediately.

Pre/Post Botox Treatment Recommendations

Your injector will speak to you about the before and after rules of Botox, but, in general, these guidelines are recommended to be followed for optimal results.

For best results, before your Botox treatment you should:

  • Avoid alcohol for 48 hours beforehand to minimize bruising

  • Avoid Vitamin E, garlic pills, ginseng, cinnamon, sushi, sunflower / pumpkin / flax seeds, fish oils, and omegas for 10 days leading up to your appointment

  • Avoid blood thinners like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, and Midol for 10 days beforehand

  • Avoid arthritis medication such as Excedrin, Voltara, Plavix, or St. John’s Wort for 10 days ahead of time

For best results, after your Botox treatment you should:

  • Try not to rub or massage the injection sites for two to four hours after the session

  • Avoid lying down or putting pressure on your face (this is a must!)

  • Avoid the gym or intense workouts for 48 hours

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours

  • Stay away from excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga) for one week afterward

Is Botox, Nuceiva, Dysport, Xeomin right for you?

If you want to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead wrinkles, laugh lines, or other facial lines you’d like to lessen, BOTOX, Nuceiva, Dysport, or Xeomin could be just the treatment you’re looking for.

Areas you can address with these treatments include:

  • Brows

  • Forehead

  • Chin

  • Nose

  • Corners of your mouth

  • Jawline

  • Neck

Please note, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you cannot get Botox treatments.

What does Botox cost?

As mentioned above, a typical treatment will require 25 to 50 ‘units’ of Botox. Pricing for treatments is based on the number of units required. At $10 per unit, this means a typical Botox treatment will cost on average from $250 to $500.

Does Botox hurt?

This is relative to each individual, but, in general, receiving a Botox treatment is not painful - if it was, you wouldn’t see the huge rise in popularity of Botox. We like to think of it as a short series of small pinches. Slightly unpleasant, but definitely tolerable. And once you experience it the first time, subsequent treatments are not so bad.

What does having Botox feel like?

When you’re new to Botox, it can feel a bit funny in the beginning, as you’re not able to move / cause the muscle contractions that lead to wrinkles. Many recipients of Botox actually report this sensation as a feeling of calmness. While it can take some getting used to, it’s totally normal, and over time, those muscles will learn not to make the exaggerated expressions that lead to wrinkles.

Immediately after treatment, you may feel a slight residual stinging from the injection. You may also experience a small bump at the injection site, similar to a mosquito bite. These will fade quickly.

While not typically common, bruising is also a possibility. If bruising occurs, it is usually very minimal and will subside within a couple of days. You can reduce your risk of bruising by avoiding Ibuprofen or Aspirin before your treatment.

Can guys get Botox? (YES! It’s nicknamed BROTOX for that reason!)

Yes! Botox is a popular treatment for men as well. That’s why it’s often referred to as Brotox! Men typically seek Botox treatments for the same primary reason women do - to reduce facial wrinkles. Men typically get Botox in the forehead to reduce creases, in corners of the eyes to prevent crow’s feet, between the eyebrows to address frown lines, and also around the mouth to target laugh lines. Botox may also be used to treat several health conditions such as neck spasms, excessive sweating, or lazy eyes.

What our BROTOX Clients Say

Just hit 40 and noticed my crow’s feet coming in the past year, so thought I would give Botox a try. I never really thought I needed Botox, but in reality, I had very strong forehead creases as well. The Botox immediately took a decade off my appearance. Anti-aging benefits aside, what I loved most was the feeling of calmness Botox gave me. At first, not being able to fire my upper facial muscles felt a bit weird, but then it felt super relaxing and stress reducing in a good way. If you’re on the fence, I say give it a try… you’ll likely end up a fan like me!
— Kevin M
Other than my wife, I haven’t told anybody I’m going for Botox. I won’t care if they find out, but in the meantime have loved all the compliments I’ve been getting for looooking gooood!
— Tyler S

At what age should you start Botox?

The prevailing approach to Botox is that it’s best implemented as a preventative treatment, or in other words, when performed early, it can delay the visible signs of aging. It’s not uncommon for individuals as young as 25 to begin going for Botox treatments. That doesn’t mean you can’t start later! As Botox continues to gain in popularity and becomes as mainstream as any other personal service, like going for a haircut or a manicure, we see clients in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, and older coming in for their first treatments and achieving fantastic results.

What’s the difference between Botox, Fillers, and PRP Treatments?

Many med spas, including The Magic Room, offer a variety of injectable treatments including Botox, Fillers and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatments. When it comes to the end result, there is some overlap in these treatments, but each takes a different approach.

As mentioned above, Botox achieves its anti-wrinkle results by blocking nerve signals to your facial muscles, which relaxes the skin and helps to eliminate tightness and wrinkles. You’ll often find Botox used in the upper parts of the face, addressing forehead creases, laugh lines, and crow’s feet.

In contrast, Fillers work immediately to plump the skin, both reducing wrinkles and also providing a noticeably different look. If you’re after that full lip look, for example, this is achieved with Fillers. You can learn more about our Filler treatments

PRP treatments take an altogether different approach by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production for natural, gradual rejuvenation. You can learn more about our PRP treatments.
